R+D Kitchen offers a simple and small menu that can also leave you a little puzzled on the types of cuisine served here.
For example, they serve spinach and cheese omelet to chicken meatballs and spaghetti (On the evening features). Maybe this is what makes them different, by having a small menu but targeting certain styles and adding their own bits of flair to it.
We had dinner on a Saturday night at the Fashion Island location. If it weren’t for reservations, I can expect a long wait before being seated.
Once entering the restaurant, you immediately notice a big oval bar area and sure enough it was packed. The restaurant was dimly lit and the candles on our tables served its purpose by giving us more light to see our menu.
The restaurant was decorated in a more masculine feel of wood and leather booths. The kitchen had glass windows that you can peer into. As for the noise level inside the restaurant, it was extremely loud. It was hard to have a conversation with Mr. J. The restaurant also offers patio seating. I think next time we will choose to sit outside or maybe come during lunch time when the bar is less likely to be busy.
Our waitress came by to greet us and gave us a moment to look through our menu. She came back to ask us what we would like to drink. Mr. J loves a good wheat beer and our waitress suggested Heavenly Hefe on draft. She came back with our beers and we decided to put our orders in.
For our appetitizer we ordered the Chicken Meatballs.
The Chicken Meatballs were good, nothing too spectacular. It was topped with maninara sauce. The waitress noticed that our appetitizer did not come out before our entrees and came by to apologize. She also said appetitizer was complimentary because of the mixup. I commend them on such awesome service. The appetitizer coming out after the entree wasn’t a huge deal to us but that extra TLC customer service is what makes us want to dine again.
Mr. J ordered the Wild Mushroom Meatloaf for his main course. The meatloaf came with wilted spinach and mashed potatoes.
Mr. J really enjoyed his food. He loved every bite of it. I had a taste of the meatloaf and I wish I had ordered that instead of the Greek Style Chicken.
The Greek Style Chicken was topped with avgolemono sauce and served with a side tabbouleh.
For it to be covered in avgolemono sauce, the chicken turned out dry and lacked flavor. For the price I was expecting it to be WOWZERS! A punch in the mouth good but it turned out be mediocre. I don’t expect to order this again.
Overall, I had a great experience at R+D Kitchen and would likely visit again to try one of their burgers. The service was amazing. I think this is the place to grab a drink with friends at the oval bar area and nosh on a side of fries or maybe go during happy hour after work.
